Why is it that with all the advances of modern technology - we still can not buy a new phone system WITHOUT an answering machine?

Isn't it bad enough that our cordless phones keep dying in the middle of a conversation (leaving me in a lurch running from room to room in a frantic search for a phone that actually will connect!) but now, when I try to find a new phone system I must purchase an unneeded answering system!

(because yes, we have a $5/mo voice mail system with our land line package)

Now, I know many of my friends have resorted to using their cell phones in place of a home phone ... however, my cell service stinks at my house! Defeating that great idea right away!

So, my request to all my influential Mommas out there ... what cordless phone system do you use & is there one you can recommend that does NOT have the unnecessary answering machine on it???
